Great news for the fashion cinema world with Matt Tyrnauer’s latest documentary film, Valentino: The Last Emperor, Making the shortlist for next years Documentary Feature Oscar.

The film that follows the lives and careers of the Italian design guru, Valentino, and his business partner Giancarlo Giammetti.

The feature film debuted in March this year, screening over hundred of theatres across the world.

While the news was comforting for directors of films in the genre, critics were left scratching their heads at why the more successful film, September Issue, which is considered a real-life Devil wears Prada, was not nominated.

The list of fifteen will soon be cut even shorter to just five finalists, with the winner to be announced at next years Oscars.

Many fashion critics believe Tyrnauer deserved the honour of making the final cut, as he had to deal with one of the most difficult people in the industry, in Valentino.

If the Academy Award judges agree, the film would acknowledge the increasing importance of fashion in film and may trigger off a new wave of fashion movies next year.

Valentino: The Last Emperor will join a A-class list of films also nominated for the coveted award, including “The Beaches of Agnes,” “Burma VJ,” “The Cove,” “Every Little Step,” “Facing Ali,” “Food, Inc.,” “Garbage Dreams,” “Living in Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders,” “The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers,” “Mugabe and the White African,” “Sergio,” “Soundtrack for a Revolution,” “Under Our Skin,” and “Which Way Home.”
