“It’s too easy to acquire ideas by opening up Art books or fashion magazines. If you access your designs from the point of view of emotion, from the limitations you face, you can change what you know and what others see.”- Toni Maticevski
To get your designs noticed you need to ensure your work is displayed in the public arena and Toni Maticevski has done just that. Sporting one of Maticevski’s latest designs was our own Jennifer Hawkins, who elegantly stepped on to the catwalk for Myer’s Autumn/Winter launch at the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.
Maticevski is one of the most talked about, and widely recognised names in Australian fashion. This Melbourne designer has sewn his way on to the fashion scene with his manipulation of traditional fashion silhouettes and use of conventional, beautiful materials.
His designs comprise a blend of textural fabrics into amazing shapes that not only look good, but are completely wearable. Every line and shape in Maticevski’s work should provoke an emotional response. Maticevski’s inspiration comes from emotion and is embellished in the form and fabric of his pieces.
Working locally in Melbourne after completing his Fashion degree at RMIT, Maticevski experienced the fashion industry process, from design to production. Although he worked with one of Australia’s finest Donna Karan, Melbourne was not enough for this budding designer so he made the move to Paris. Paris enabled Maticevski to live out his true creative potential and it was here that he found his first mentor and stock list, Marthe Desmounlins.
Every Maticevski collection differs from the one before it. His garments involve a wide colour palette that provides each one with an unusual yet, complementary aspect to each collection. He has showcased a variety of his seasonal collections on famous catwalks around the world, and is sure to make headlines in the fashion industry future.
